Making the profits public

Exxon executives last week refused to tell state Senators what they earn it Alaska.

Today, Sen. Hollis French asked why we don’t already know how much the company makes here, considering our tax is based on profits.

Deputy Revenue Commissioner Marcia Davis said the state knows, but just isn’t allowed to make the figures public.

ConocoPhillips lists Alaska as a separate entry in its annual filings and quarterly reports, but BP and Exxon do not.

This has nothing to do with company philosophy, Davis said, it’s about materiality: Alaska is a large enough portion of ConocoPhillips’ global operations to warrant a separate listing.

French wants the Legislature to consider making the information public.

“If we grant you a profits-based tax system, you should tell us what your profits are,” French said.

EDIT: BP does report Alaska specific figures.
