Tax n’ save
The Senate Judiciary passed an amendment this morning to save the surplus from a future tax increase.
Sen. Gene Therriault and the Senate Minority rolled this idea out earlier this week, responding to charges that a tax increase would simply grow government spending.
In years where the tax brings in more revenue than the previous year, the amendment allows the Legislature to put half of the surplus into the Constitutional Budget Reserve. The amendment doesn’t require savings because one Legislature can’t force another to make an appropriation.
