Owning oil
Taking on some of the issues surrounding the special session, Andrew Halco — former legislator and gubernatorial candidate — brings up “The Distribution of Ownership of US Oil and Natural Gas Companies,” a September 2007 study looking at the way ownership of oil companies moves from industry executives, to investment companies, to middle class families through stock, retirement accounts and other portfolios.
The New York Times Magazine ran a piece this weekend about nationalization, or the growing trend of countries taking their oil resources away from private companies. This meshes with an AP story from Steve Quinn this weekend asking whether that trend might make Alaska more attractive, even with a higher tax rate.
News-Miner reporters Stefan Milkowski and Eric Lidji bring you up-to-date info about the governor's oil tax and
the gas line plans as well as tossing in some tidbits that have nowhere else to go.
