It’s been a while since ANWR came up on the national stage, but a big group of Senate Democrats (and one Independent) in Washington today introduced a bill to designate the Coastal Plan of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as wilderness.

The 1.5 million acre Coastal Plain is the northern-most chunk of the 19 million acre refuge.

It’s got a lot of oil and it’s got a lot of animals.

Around 8 million acres of the refuge is already designated Wilderness, a permanent protection status restricting lands to specific uses. The designation would end oil and gas development in the Coastal Plain.
