This is a great publication. You are so astute as to the differences, and kind and willing to learn. This shows the respect and honor you have. Thanks for this exposure.

I have been "exposed" to many different cultures in my long life. The one thing I have found constant is what you told the soldier. It is the understanding part that helps keep cultures from being kinder, trusting and working together.

Understanding comes from many things in a person's life, the way he was raised, what he has been exposed to, what he has been taught to believe is right or wrong. So many little things that affect understanding.

The fact that you understood that says a lot about you.

Thanks for your thoughts and for being over there with our warriors. Stay safe and have a wonderful and safe New Year.

"...but I have to, for the most part, respect it. "

Ummm, no. You don't. Especially as a woman you should NOT be respecting it. You should be throwing your head back and hollering, "F--- NO!" to the black-eyed coot trying to diss you by calling you lazy. Challenge him to an arm-wrestling contest next-time. Kick him in the shins. Stand up to him, and let him know that just because his sexual organ happens to be located on the outside does NOT make him King of the Walk, nor entitle him to a god-damned thing, including respect.

You're there, embedded, to report back what you see. Just as important, though, you are there as a role model to some very backwards people about what women can and should be. Just remember when you're tempted to do that "respect" thing, that Saddam had a lot of people on the payroll torturing a lot of other people. Chances are if you're talking to a dirt farmer who wants to know how fast you can make bread it's because he doesn't have any other skills to sell except the centuries old fine art of torturing his fellow citizens, or marrying women and then bullying them into working for him.

That's his problem. Your problem is to hold yourself up as something his bullied wives can wish they were, and that his daughters can become if they can just a glimpse the possibilities. I'm real sure the American soldiers are just as disgusted as we are and will have your back if you're all of a sudden feeling shy and womanly.

Homemade fresh bread is fantastic, but many of us ladies are often trying to make sure we have everything we need for ourselves and families and have a career. It is clearly a sincere lack of cultural understanding & kindness on his part to be polite to his guests...
