John was born to Jacob and Emily Johnson and grew up in Orem, Utah. He graduated from Mountain View High School in 1965. While attending college at Brigham Young University, he married his high school sweetheart, Jillian Walters, on July 27, 1967.

Shortly after graduating with a degree in political science in 1971, John moved his small family to Alaska. He taught history at West Valley High School for 17 years.

John was active in his church and was a Boy Scout leader for many years. He enjoyed camping, fishing and hiking. One of his favorite spots was the Three Lakes area of Denali National Park. John was an avid "Star Wars" fan, with a large collection of toys. He enjoyed his many years as a member of Rotary and the Aurora Borealis Singers.

John's creative spirit, warm smile and generous nature will be missed by all who had the privilege to know him. He always had a joke to tell or friendly advice to give. He was always up for a game of chess or a trip to the ice cream parlor.

Survivor's information

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Linda Johnson of Portland; grandchildren, Braxton and Hailey of Portland; brother, Dennis Johnson of Kent, Wash.; and sister, Marjean Henrickson of Anchorage. John was preceded in death by his wife, Jillian, and his brother, William.
