Update: Stranded mushers airlifted

Searchers have found and evacuated the remaining five teams stranded on the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race, according to officials.

The mushers and their dogs were airlifted to the 101 Mile Steese Highway dog drop Monday evening, a posting at www.yukonquest.com said.

Nine mushers had been located by 4 p.m., Alaska State Troopers said, and at least six had been airlifted with their dogs to the 101 Mile Steese Highway dog drop. It is unclear if the airlifted teams were in the 1,000-mile Quest or the 300-mile version.

Another three mushers in the Quest 300 were seen making progress along the trail into 101 Mile, officials said.

Quest officials also said the missing dog team of Randy Chappel had been located.
More details will be posted as they come available.
