Eric Engman/News-Miner Defending champion Lance Mackey of Kasilof makes his way across American Summit after leaving the Eagle checkpoint during the 2006 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Mackey was the first musher to arrive in Dawson City, Yukon, on Thursday, the halfway point in the 1,000 mile race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse, Yukon. Mackey arrived in Dawson besting previous run times between Eagle and Dawson by about five hours.
